Behind the stitch
James Cleveland "J.C." Owens, better known as Jesse Owens, was an elite track and field athlete who pushed the boundaries of what was thought possible.
From winning high school track events to breaking records as "The Buckeye Bullet" at Ohio State, Owens set himself up for success at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
Before his events, Adi Dassler, founder of Adidas, asked Owens to wear their new spikes. Owens agreed to race in the new shoes, becoming the first African American with the sponsorship, and first person ever to win four Olympic gold medals—in German-made shoes no less. Owens' victories are some of the most memorable of the Olymic Games, challenging beliefs at the height of global discrimination and honored as a symbol for resilience on and off the track.
