Behind the Stitch

Established in 1825, the University of Miami chose "Ibis", the ibis, as the school's unofficial mascot in 1926. Native to the Everglades and known for their fearlessness in stormy weather, the ibis protects those nearby until the storm clears.

Gone but not forgotten, in 1950, the school's first official mascot was a brown and white boxer named Hurricane I. Not long after, the U created Sebastian the Ibis (originally named "Icky") in 1957 to take over as the true mascot and symbol in the school's legacy.
Leading the football team onto the filed of Hard Rock Stadium from a cloud of smoke, as if giving the clear that a storm has passed, Sebastian brings the stadium alive and fans to their feet at every home game.
