Behind the stitch 

In 1947, a name-the-team fan contest was held to choose a new name for the "AAFC Bisons" to stand out from the standard "Bisons" that Buffalo teams are traditionally associated with. The winning choice was "Bills", named after William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody.

William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody was an American solider, showman and entertainer, known to give the Wild West its name—setting the stage for Cody to become a Western folk hero, and forever a part of the NFL team's legacy.
