Behind the Stitch

Head football coach and athletic director at the time, Fielding H. Yost, began the search to procure two live wolverines at the University of Michigan football games in 1923. 

Not until 1927 did the Detroit Zoo received multiple wolverines, two of which they allowed to attend football Saturdays: Biff and Bennie.

Quick to recognize the dangers of live animals in the stadium, Biff and Bennie only made a few appearances on the sidelines, but continue to be celebrated throughout the legacy of Michigan athletics.
