Calvin (Cal) Edwin Ripken Jr., nicknamed "Iron Man" for leading the record for consecutive Major League Baseball games played, is a former baseball shortstop and third baseman who played 21 seasons in the MLB for the Baltimore Orioles (1981-2001). His Hall of Fame career includes the honors of Rookie of the Year, two American League Most Valuable Player Awards, and 16 All-Star appearances. 

Before the Iron Man, Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees held what was once thought to be an unbreakable record of consecutive games played with 2,130 games to his name—which held strong for 56 years. 

Cal beat Lou Gehrig's record on September 6, 1995, against the California Angels (now the Los Angeles Angels), at Camden Yards stadium in Baltimore, MD. With many more years to play in his career, Cal surpassed the record by 502 games, giving him the "Iron Man" title with 2,632 consecutive games played.
