Behind the Stitch
To the opposing team, it's too rowdy—to the home team, it's organized chaos: The Roll Call.
Believed to begin in the 1990's, a group of New York Yankees fans called The Bleacher Creatures created the Roll Call to bring fans and players together. From section 39 to 203, these fans and their call are part of the team's legacy.
How it works: Just after the first pitch, the leader of the Bleacher Creatures quiets fans, claps, and shouts the name of a player on the field. Following in stride, the entire section joins in until the player makes a gesture of recognition. Once the player nods in their direction, fans move on to the next.
With devoted persistence of their attendance and chants, the Bleacher Creatures and their Roll Call are proudly recognized as part of the team's home-field advantage.
*Knowing there's a game to be won and focus to be had, the pitcher and catcher remain excluded from the call.
