Behind the Stitch
Now known as the San Francisco Giants, the team was founded in 1883 as the New York Gothams. Legend has it that Jim Mutrie, manager at the time, said the infamous quote "My big fellows! My giants!" after a big win against the Philadelphia Phillies. From then on, starting in 1885, the team became the New York Giants.
Founded by John B. Day and Mutrie, and taking the spot of the Troy Trojans in the National League, the Gothams played for two historic seasons.
In 1958, Horace Stoneham as the owner of the team, moved the Giants out west—changing the team's name to the San Francisco Giants. Bringing back its roots, the team established the Gothams Club in 2013 at Oracle Park.
Along with all current and previous players, fans can also join the exclusive club. Invitation only—join the waitlist, grab a basket of garlic fries, and sit tight.
