Behind the stitch
Broadcaster for the Pittsburg Penguins from 1974-2021, Mike Lange, was a critical member of the team, bringing fans to their feet and life to the rink. At the age of 9, Mike knew he was going to be a broadcaster—specifically with a standout phrase. This became a reality with his many goal calls (aka "Langeisms"):
"Great balls of fire!"
"I'll be cow-kicked!"
"Get in the fast lane, Grandma"
"Scratch my back with a hacksaw!"
After every victory, he ended the night with his most signature sign-off: "Ladies and Gentlemen, Elvis has just left the building"—letting fans know there's no need for an encore.
